Big Ass Asian Adventure Update

After some technical difficulties, I'm back to the blog! I have a lot to update about. I'm in Siem Reap, Cambodia right now and it's been simply amazing. I absolutely love it here! The people have been so welcoming and friendly, the food's fantastic, prices are cheap, and innumerable temples from the 11th and 12th centuries await my exploration. All in all good times…but I'll get there eventually.

Let me back up a second. Last time I was able to update, I was in Koh Chang. Ohhh, Koh Chang. That place is filled with a lot of memories now haha. Our days were mostly spent doing nothing on the beach - the way it should be! We did a snorkeling trip one day, and that was the high point of our activity.

One of my goals of the trip for me is also figuring out how to use all of my fancy camera's settings. This fire show provided a good opportunity to mess around with the shutter speed.

I ♥ the beach and the beach ♥s me!

Soooo...I had way too much fun on our last night and spent the next day traveling back to Bangkok in a pretty miserable condition. But I made it, and we were all ready for our 4th traveling companion, Brittny, to arrive. Her plane was delayed by a couple of days though, so we ended up having a bit more time to sightsee around Bangkok. We went to Ayutthaya, a historic city kind of like Thailand's version of Kyoto or Gyeongju. We took the train for about 2 hours, hired a tuk-tuk for the day, and checked out a bunch of the old temples. Plenty of good photo ops abound.

Once Brit got here, we set off to see Bangkok's big sights. The main things on the agenda were the Grand Palace and the huge reclining Buddha.

We could have seen more, but by the time Brittny finally made it, we were all ready to move along to Cambodia. We took a bus to the Thailand-Cambodia border and from there got a taxi to Siem Reap. We were aware that oftentimes the bus companies try to scam you by making you stop a bunch of times at random restaurants/rest stops just so you spend a bit of money there. We didn't like the look of it when our bus stopped about a mile from the border and wanted us to wait a while to change buses, so we ended up just walking to Cambodia with our big backpacks and all. Not too shabby being able to say I walked to Cambodia, eh?

Our first night in Siem Reap was really cool because we were able to meet up with some other friends from Korea who were also traveling: Nuala, who I went to Hong Kong with, and Clare, another teacher friend. The main place to hang out in Siem Reap is called Pub Street, which (funnily enough) is a street full of bars and restaurants. We met up with our friends at a bar called Angkor What? (yea, awesome) and had ourselves a good time.

It's all about the happy "special" pizza

My next post will be all about Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples, cause I've got about a million more photos to post :)

As always, all of my photos are on flickr.

"Her plane was delayed by a couple of days though"

I love how blasé that sentence is. Here, people start fussing if a plane is delayed even a couple of minutes.

haha I know, she was really upset though. Luckily they upgraded her to business class to make up for the trouble.
