Woo. So far, Vietnam has really impressed me. I was expecting more of a 3rd world country, or at least a really busy and dirty place. Well Ho Chi Minh was busy, but it felt just as modern as anywhere in Thailand, and it was way cleaner than Pnom Penh. I was really surprised since it's supposed to be a communist country, but nothing about it seems that way (other than the hammer and sickle flags everywhere, that is). There's plenty of Western influence, and the shopping is out of control. I'm loving it here! We only stayed in HCM a couple of days, but it was enough to feel a connection with the place. Our first full day, we visited the Cu Chi Tunnels, passages the Viet Cong built to get around and fight during the war. It was pretty surreal being in a former war zone, and actually crawling through a short segment of tunnel (damn those tunnels are small!). Having an onsite shooting range also added to the effect.
The next day we took a tour on the Mekong River, which was a lot of fun. We took a few boat rides along the river, got to wear those silly conical straw hats, rode bikes for a while, and generally had a good time outdoors.

It's all about the good photo ops, you know. My next post will have even more of those, as yesterday I decided to try riding an ostrich. Now that was an experience.... also ATVs on the sand dunes of Mui Ne! All coming soon to an internet connection near you.
