Back to Thailand

With fresh 30-day visas in our passports, it was time to say goodbye to KL and head back to Thailand for the island portion of the trip. We flew through wonderful Air Asia to Phuket in about an hour, sorted our hostel situation, and got some delicious curries to welcome ourselves back to good ol' Siam. By the way, I'm failing at the whole food blog idea, but let it be known that I now can't go a full 24 hours without some form of curry/coconut milk in my life. Thailand, you spoil me so!

Anywho, I honestly wasn't too impressed with Phuket. I quickly saw that it's more of a package-tourist and family destination than a backpacker's hub. Now, there's nothing wrong with package tourists or families (I happen to love my own quite a lot) but this all meant for much higher prices and less of that authentic "Thai" feeling. It felt kind of like Ocean City on acid: tons of bars near the beach, except here they had names like "Rock Hard a Go Go" and "Girls Girls Girls: about 20 Gorgeous, a few ugly and fat". No joke. Remind me again why so many Europeans love bringing their kids to Phuket again? Oh well, it just wasn't my kind of atmosphere. Our main purpose in visiting Phuket was for it to be a springboard for other trips, so it served its purpose well.

Time to get the tan back up!

Parasailing on the beach.. We were very impressed with the helper dude who wasn't even strapped into the sail; he just lifted himself up and held on, helping people land all day without even breaking a sweat.

Now we're on Koh Phi Phi (Phi Phi island, pronounced pee pee), which is definitely a backpacker's haven. It's very small at only 28 square kilometers, so there aren't many cars or motorbikes clogging the walkways. It's easy to get around and there are tons of cute little shops and restaurants. That combined with a party atmosphere and a gorgeous beach - what more could a girl ask for? The main attraction around here is Maya Beach, the place where the 2000 Leo movie "The Beach" was filmed. I'm a big fan of the movie, so it should be really cool to see the place for myself. That's on the agenda for tomorrow, so I'll report back later with plenty of photos. Woot woot!
